Abstract
Horses have long held a special place in the hearts and minds of Irish people.
As a result, the equine industry plays a role in Irish society disproportionate to
its direct economic impact. This is not to say that the industry is of little
economic significance. Direct employment in the different segments of the
industry amounts to over 15,000 (in terms of full-time job equivalents), with
perhaps a similar number involved in spin-off industries such as
accommodation, transport, services and supplies. This employment is divided
fairly evenly between the three main industry components: the breeding of
thoroughbreds; training and racing; and sport horses (show jumping, eventing
and leisure riding).
