    Abstract

A common problem encountered in working with large classes is the difficulty of providing sufficient support and assistance to allow the students to develop both the skills and the confidence required for them to car r y out original research. This paper reports on the use of group work with limited guidance to facilitate small-scale research. While one area of geography is used in the example , the method is applicable to a wide variety of other subject areas, both within geography and more widely.
