Abstract
It is perhaps fitting that this chapter recalls an individual for
whom the preached word became a priority.' This was Fr
Algernon Brown (1848-78), a young Paulist priest who spent
most of his short priestly ministry (a mere four years) at St Paul
the Apostle Church on West 59th Street in New York City. He
was one of the early pioneers of the Paulist 'five-minute
sermons' which began to be preached at Low Masses in 1876 at
the Paulist mother Church where he was based. The
unidentified author of the Preface to a volume of these sermons,
published in 1879, explains the rationale behind the five-minute
sermons.
