Abstract
This paper presents a short introduction to a study I carried out over a three-year period in
two Irish secondary schools into identity construction and young people (O’ Grady, 2012). I
draw on textual material from that work (vignettes of conversation and creative artefacts) and
some of my reading and reflections, to underscore the theme of ethnicity and the need to
make it visible in the construction of a white identity.
