    Abstract

The synthesis and photophysical and biological investigation of Ru(II)-polypyridyl stabilized watersoluble, luminescent gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are described. These structures bind to DNA and undergo rapid cellular uptake, being localized within the cell cytoplasm and nucleus within 4 h.
