Abstract
This article examines two German-language novels— Schlafgänger by Dorothee Elmiger and Gott ist nicht schüchtern by Olga Grjasnowa—to illuminate how the literary depiction of borders can contribute to a textured understanding of how borders function today. It draws on border studies, moving beyond a spatial framework to consider borders as territorial and non-territorial constructs. Elmiger's Schlafgänger adopts a wide perspective by profiling travellers with different credentials. Grjasnowa's novel, by contrast, is rooted in the European refugee reception crisis and focuses on displacement. By examining these two texts together, this article investigates the potential and limits of border narratives.
