Abstract
There is an element of continuity between Maynooth College, founded in 1795, and the old Irish colleges on the continent. The teaching and the professors were identical. The French revolution was anathema to these scholars who had been forced to emigrate. But it is with some exaggeration that they have been accused of spreading the Jansenist or Gallican doctrines. These formative years did shape what soon became the cradle of the catholic clergy of Ireland.
