Abstract
This paper considers some of the trajectories by whch
the experience of the victims' of the Bhopal Gas Tragedy
has found its way into the medical literature. Focusing
on one specific scientific intenrention, I try to follow the
theoretical implications of Veena Das's' formulation
regardng the professional transformation of suffering
(1 995: 144). In Critical Events she argues movingly that
the discourse of the professional, even as it speaks on
behalf of the victim, does not seem to have the conceptual
structures by whch voice can be given to them.
