Abstract
The following essay is an invitation to all who are interested in the quality of schooling in Ireland to recognise the cultural strengths which still distinguish that schooling, to acknowledge the real causes of the
strains which yearly grow more serious for pupils, teachers and parents alike, to learn from the policy mistakes of our neighbours and to consider anew the deeper, or more enduring, sources of improvement in teaching quality.
