Abstract
ANNE RYAN and ANN O'BRIEN examine recent developments in access initiatives to higher education for socio-economically disadvantaged students in Ireland. They argue that the dominant liberal approaches to access serve to consolidate existing elitist and exclusionary practices in the processes
of knowledge creation and they call for a more comprehensive and radical approach.
