Abstract
Questionnaire surveys are used to elicit the perceptions of rural
residents of the West of Ireland of the performance of a number of
state agencies involved in rural development. The results reveal
widespread disenchantment and alienation, with particular emphasis
being placed on the inappropriateness of centralised state schemes to
the specific circumstances of local areas.
